Middle East embraces new PRIMAL™ AS-8012 binder from Dow Construction Chemicals
PRIMAL™ AS-8012 Styrene Acrylic Emulsion Polymer, a new binder produced by Dow Construction Chemicals at its Jebel Ali facility, is gaining great market support in the Middle East, just six months after its launch. Several major producers are already buying the product, and additional approvals are well underway.
PRIMAL™ AS-8012 is a next generation, environmentally-advanced binder for two-component, cement-based flexible waterproofing membranes, and was designed with the region’s specific application needs in mind, particularly high temperature performance. With a manufacturing base close to customers’ own production sites, customers can order in drums or bulk, offering flexibility and demonstrating Dow’s commitment to meeting local market needs.
Supporting growth opportunities
Flexible cementitious waterproofing membranes can be applied with a brush and cure to form a water resistant, flexible coating. Opportunities for such technology are expanding in the Middle East – particularly for products with a superior environmental profile compared to incumbents. Dow was one of the first to offer the region an APEO-free and formaldehyde-free binder with very low Volatile Organic Content for such applications*.
“The binder offers high flexibility, elongation and excellent crack-bridging ability, but was also designed with specific attributes relevant to the region’s needs in mind,” explained Brown Joseph, Business Development Manager for Middle East & Africa. “Performance at high temperatures, including high tensile strength, good water and alkali resistance had to be a given, but with regulatory requirements key to potable water applications, it has been vital to the product’s acceptance that we could demonstrate compliance with internationally-recognised standards too.”
The binder supports formulation of membranes for applications such as waterproofing wet areas, basement walls, swimming pools, balconies, facade terraces and waste-water drains. Samples of a fully formulated membrane containing the binder have been certified as compliant with British Standard BS 6920. Passing the tests is a requirement for obtaining official approval for use in contact with potable water, and demonstrating such third party endorsement has been vital to gaining market support.
Enabling compliance with standards
“We’ve offered our customers formulation recommendations and details on ensuring compliance with BS 6920, and that has made a real difference,” added Christine Delabroye, Field Marketing Manager. “We believe this extra dedication will not only support the continued growth of PRIMAL™ AS-8012, it also gives us an opportunity to further build relationships with our customers and demonstrates our ability to meet their specific application requirements.”
“We’re proud that targeted outreach and our ability to offer a product tailored to local needs has resulted in success for PRIMAL™ AS-8012,” added Ali Ammar, Sales Manager for the Middle East. “We’re committed to developing more sustainable construction products for this growing market and believe this product’s success demonstrates our ability to do just that.”
* APEO is not intentionally added and is not knowingly introduced from another raw material. Made without formaldehyde or formaldehyde-generating materials and does not release formaldehyde under normal operating conditions. Dow however does not routinely analyze PRIMAL™ AS-8012 for formaldehyde or any other substances that are not listed in the Safety Data Sheet or Sales Specification.
